Heights of pre-special points of Shimura varieties
Let s be a special point on a Shimura variety, and x a pre-image of s in a fixed fundamental set of the associated Hermitian symmetric domain. We prove that the height of x is polynomially bounded with respect to the discriminant of the centre of the endomorphism ring of the corresponding ZZ -Hodge structure. Our bound is the final step needed to complete a proof of the André–Oort conjecture under the conjectural lower bounds for the sizes of Galois orbits of special points, using a strategy of Pila and Zannier
Finding halo streams with a pencil-beam survey: new wraps in the Sagittarius stream
We use data from two CFHT-MegaCam photometric pencil-beam surveys in the g'
and the r' bands to measure distances to the Sagittarius, the Palomar 5 and the
Orphan stream. We show that, using a cross-correlation algorithm to detect the
turnoff point of the main sequence, it is possible to overcome the main
limitation of a two-bands pencil-beam survey, namely the lack of adjacent
control-fields that can be used to subtract the foreground and background stars
to enhance the signal on the colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs). We describe the
cross-correlation algorithm and its implementation. We combine the resulting
main sequence turnoff points with theoretical isochrones to derive photometric
distances to the streams. Our results (31 detections on the Sagittarius stream
and one each for the Palomar 5 and the Orphan streams) confirm the findings by
previous studies, expand the distance trend for the Sagittarius faint southern
branch and, for the first time, trace the Sagittarius faint branch of the
northern-leading arm out to 56 kpc. In addition, they show evidence for new
substructure: we argue that these detections trace the continuation of the
Sagittarius northern-leading arm into the southern hemisphere, and find a
nearby branch of the Sagittarius trailing wrap in the northern hemisphere.Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures, 2 table
A skewer survey of the Galactic halo from deep CFHT and INT images
We study the density profile and shape of the Galactic halo using deep
multicolour images from the MENeaCS and CCCP projects, over 33 fields selected
to avoid overlap with the Galactic plane. Using multicolour selection and PSF
homogenization techniques we obtain catalogues of F stars (near-main sequence
turnoff stars) out to Galactocentric distances up to 60kpc. Grouping nearby
lines of sight, we construct the stellar density profiles through the halo in
eight different directions by means of photometric parallaxes. Smooth halo
models are then fitted to these profiles. We find clear evidence for a
steepening of the density profile power law index around R=20 kpc, from -2.50
+- 0.04 to -4.85 +- 0.04, and for a flattening of the halo towards the poles
with best-fit axis ratio 0.63 +- 0.02. Furthermore, we cannot rule out a mild
triaxiality (w>=0.8). We recover the signatures of well-known substructure and
streams that intersect our lines of sight. These results are consistent with
those derived from wider but shallower surveys, and augur well for upcoming,
wide-field surveys of comparable depth to our pencil beam surveys.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, 6 table
A generalization of the Bombieri-Pila determinant method
The so-called determinant method was developed by Bombieri and Pila in 1989
for counting integral points of bounded height on affine plane curves. In this
paper we give a generalization of that method to varieties of higher dimension,
yielding a proof of Heath-Brown's 'Theorem 14' by real-analytic considerations
alone.Comment: 13 page
Thermal Decomposition of Diphenyl Tetroxane in Chlorobenzene Solution
The thermal decomposition of Cyclic Diperoxide of Benzaldehyde 3,6-diphenyl-1,2,4,5-tetroxane, (DFT) in chlorobenzene solution in the studied temperature range (130°C - 166°C) satisfactorily satisfies a first order law up to 60% conversions of diperoxide. DFT would decompose through a mechanism in stages and initiated by the homolytic breakdown of one of the peroxidic bonds of the molecule, with the formation of the corresponding intermediate biradical. The concentration studied was very low, so that the effects of secondary reactions of decomposition induced by free radicals originated in the reaction medium can be considered minimal or negligible. The activation parameters for the unimolecular thermal decomposition reaction of the DFT are ΔH# = 30.52 ± 0.3 kcal·mol-1 and ΔS# = -6.38 ± 0.6 cal·mol-1 K-1. The support for a step-by-step mechanism instead of a process concerted is made by comparison with the theoretically calculated activation energy for the thermal decomposition of 1,2,4,5-tetroxane.Fil: Bordón, Alexander Germán. Spectrophotometric determination of the deltamethrin
In the province of Corrientes is found highest production of indoor plants from all Argentina, specially in the northeast of this province. This is because the low frequency orthelack of frosts, allowing a lower cost in the production, since heating is not needed. In this type of cultive is commonly used thedeltamethrin, as the result of this, the validation of a simple method comparable with the gas chromatography for the determination of this Pesticide on both, irrigation and consumption water, was studied. In this work, a spectrophotometric method is proposed for the determination of deltamethrin inirrigation water from the area of flower crops located in the Department of Concepción in the province of Corrientes. Deltamethrin solutions in a range from 0,025 to 1 mg/L on irrigation water were prepared. The absorbance spectrum was scanned between 200 and 400 nm. The maximum absorbance was found at 220 nm. A calibration curve in the range from 0.025 to 1 mg/L, responded to A = (0.3246± 0.0224) C + (0.0096 ± 0.0068) with R2 = 0.998. The % RSD was 0.961 indicating good repeatability for the analytical procedure. The accuracy in the recovery experience was 99.0 - 109.6%. The statistical comparison using the t-test and the F-test indicates that there are no significant differences between GC and spectrophotometric methods, with a confidence level of 95%. The specificity and intermediate accuracy tests were satisfactory.Fil: Gimenez, L. I.. Universidad Nacional del Nordeste. Facultad de Ciencias Exactas Naturales y Agrimensura. Cycle of Knowledge in the Management of the Supply Chain of Corn for Human Consumption
The objective of this study is to characterize the cycle of knowledge in the supply chain of the industry of corn for human consumption. White corn is cultivated almost exclusively for human consumption and it has a significant value in the food supply in countries whose diet has a high proportion of this variety of corn, such as: Venezuela, México and Colombia in America, and the Republic of South Africa and Sahel countries in Africa. Corn is produced in Venezuela, under rainfed conditions and in a highly mechanized production system. The cycle of knowledge is defined as a progressive spiral in which knowledge is created, stored, transferred, applied and preserved, in order to increase the competitiveness and sustainability of organizations and companies in the food supply chain. This non experimental and crosssectional research is of a descriptive type. It was conducted in Venezuela during the second semester of 2009 in the supply chain of white corn, specifically, at the level of first tier producers (primary sector). The population is constituted by 1,754 producers of corn in the most important producing regions of the country. The representative sample was selected by the stratified sampling technique with proportional allocation: by association of corn producers and according to the grain yield. A questionnaire was designed and conducted according to the structured survey method. Its validity was verified by discriminant tests of items and its reliability through Bartlett's test, variance factorial analysis, Kaiser/Meyer/Olkin and Cronbach Alpha, achieving the last one a value of 0.9276.The production units have an average area of 67.17 ha, with 1.97 permanent workers and 4.06 temporary workers. They obtained a physical productivity of 4,210.45 kg/ha. The Knowledge Index (KI) achieved a value of 69.78% and the Perception Index of the results (PI) was 76.06%. The Pearson correlation among these indices was positive and significant with a value of 0.51. The factorial analysis for principal components with rotated factors allows obtaining four factors from the five dimensions originally considered. These factors are: (1) knowledge creation, (2) knowledge storage, (3) knowledge transfer and application, and (4) preservation of knowledge. The results allow us to conclude that the cycle of knowledge is managed in four stages in an intuitive and predominantly tacit manner which is the reason why those practices related to explicit knowledge become the agents of differentiation. Moreover, the existence of a positive correlation between the Knowledge Index and the Perception Index of the positive results by the producer was also proven
